The beach towns along Lake Michigan all have something different to offer visitors from places like Navy Pier in Chicago with ferris wheels to quaint harbor towns like Winthrop Harbor that offer sailing charters around the lake.
The Mississippi River also provides opportunities for water sports as well as scenic riverboat tours that give visitors a chance to see the river from a different perspective. There are plenty of outfitters throughout Illinois that can help you plan your adventure on the Mississippi River or other water bodies in the area.
Bike Along the Scenic Great River Road
The Great River Road is a National Scenic Byway that follows the mighty Mississippi River for over 3,000 miles through ten states. In Illinois, this scenic route covers 550 miles from Rock Island to Cairo along the western edge of the state. Biking along the Great River Road is a perfect way to experience some of Illinois’ most beautiful landscapes while getting some exercise!
This route takes you through charming small towns and past historic sites, as well as providing stunning views of the river itself. You can also stop at various parks and wildlife areas along the way to explore more.

Illinois is known as the Land of Lincoln, and what better way to experience the history of the state than by visiting the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. This museum has something for everyone, from interactive exhibits that recreate important moments in Lincoln’s life to artifacts that give a glimpse into his personal life. You can even see a replica of the log cabin he was born in!
One of my favorite exhibits at this museum is the holographic theater, where you can see a projection of Lincoln giving a speech. It’s amazing how realistic it looks!
The museum also has rotating temporary exhibits, so be sure to check those out as well. If you’re interested in American history, this is definitely a must-see attraction.
Tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio in Oak Park
If you’re an architecture buff, you’ll love touring Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio in Oak Park. Wright is considered one of America’s greatest architects, and his Prairie School style revolutionized architectural design. During your tour, you’ll get to see where Wright lived and worked for 20 years.
The home features many original furnishings designed by Wright himself, as well as his personal art collection. You’ll also get to see some of his most iconic designs up close – from stained glass windows to intricate woodwork.
But what I found most interesting about this tour was learning about Wright’s personal life – he had quite the scandalous love life! Our guide shared stories about his affairs with clients’ wives (including one who set fire to her own house!), which made for a fascinating visit.
Visit Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site
Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site may not be as well-known as some other historical sites in Illinois, but it’s definitely worth a visit. This site preserves the remains of a pre-Columbian Native American city, which was once the largest city north of Mexico. The mounds themselves are awe-inspiring – some are over 100 feet tall!
The site also includes an interpretive center where you can learn about the culture and daily life of the Mississippian people who lived here over 1,000 years ago. It’s fascinating to see how advanced their civilization was – they had a complex social structure and were skilled farmers and artisans.
Overall, I highly recommend visiting Cahokia Mounds if you’re interested in history or archaeology. It’s amazing to think that such a sophisticated society existed right here in Illinois so long ago.
